Environmental Vandalism in Mayoral Campaign

A Review on Political Behavior in Semarang Municipality, 2010

According to Dictionary.com, vandalism is defined as “mischievous or malicious destruction or damage of property”. The bottom line of this definition, if I may say here, means an act of destroying or making worse a thing (i.e., property, asset, etc.). The scope of vandalism, among others, can be destruction of the previously steady and well-organized situation. Vandalism I would like to briefly present here is one that of environmenta-related.

Vandalism occurred in political stance, when mayor candidates were having campaigns to the public. The campaign was held to elect Semarang Municipal Mayor for 2010-2015 period. As what local people often met before, vandalism resulting in environmental damage and disgrace was still in practice during the Mayoral Election. Before this event, vandalism also took place in Legislative Election, Presidential Election, and Local Leader Election. The campaign trend of using public space as a means to introduce the candidates to the will-be voters had not changed significantly. It was surely the rights of the campaign organizers to make as creative socialization as possible in order to introduce their supported candidates to the public for the purpose of vote getting. However, I’d rater disagree with the way they violate environmental beauty by place pamphlets, fliers, billboards, stickers and the likes, in such that they deteriorated the environment.

Every election has left the same old story: garbages and wastes after the election had been done. Papers scattered everywhere, making the surrounding environment dirty. A simple question arosen from this case will be, “What can the candidates do for the people, if they keep annoying the environment?” or “Isn’t there any other way to socialize themselves without destroying the environment?”.

Today, Indonesia, like other countries, has experienced advance of technology, in particular, the information technology. The introduction of communication devices such as cellular phone, television, radio, and even the Internet, should have been used to keep in touch with the will-be constituents once a candidate has won the election. They do not need to use the public space as their vehicle towards a successful result. Indeed, they tend to make the environment worse. Campaign ornaments were attached on trees and walls around the blocks where many people generally surpass and do they activities. Sometimes people feel sick of what they are watching. I think it is time to stop this bad habit, unless our environment will be damaged. It is environment where they live, but why do they seem having no responsible manners? What a disappointing behaviour….
